The LAH is one of the busiest equine surgical units in the country. A team of experienced equine theatre nursing staff and anesthetists assists the surgeons. Round the clock large team of nursing staff provides post-operative care and house vets under the supervision of the surgeons. Many surgeries are performed under general anesthesia in our fully equipped equine operating theatre. Many procedures can now be performed with the horse standing under sedation and local anesthesia thereby reducing the risk of complications associated with general anesthesia and reducing the cost for the owner.
A wide range of different emergency and elective surgeries are regularly performed in LAH. Orthopedic Surgery (arthroscopy, treatment and management of musculoskeletal injuries such as wounds, septic joints and fractures), Colic Surgery (not only is the experience of the surgeons important when performing corrective surgery but intensive care nursing in the immediate post-operative period is essential to a successful outcome, there fore post-operative colic patients are nursed and monitored around the clock in our intensive care facility by our skilled and experienced nursing and veterinary staff), Dental and sinus surgery, Respiratory tract surgery.

Loss of performance in a competition horse is common thing in Lithuania. These may include low grade lameness, back soreness or other musculoskeletal issues: medical problems (eg. anemia, viral infection, post-viral syndrome, gastric ulceration or respiratory disease); gynecological problems (particularly in mares); dental or biting issues or may be due to ill-fitting tack, rider or training issues, temperament problems or may be because a horse is being asked to compete at a level out with its natural ability. A combination of these issues often contributes to poor performance or a loss of performance. Horses that are referred to the hospital for investigation of poor performance are usually required to stay in for several days. At LAH the multi-discipline team approach is taken to make investigation of poor performance or loss of performance. It is important that the horse’s normal tack is brought in and where possible, that the horse’s usual rider is available at the time of initial consultation to ride the horse.
LAH veterinarians, residents and technicians are dedicated to providing your animal with the very best treatment and care.
